The Best Eye Exercises

One of the most popular natural remedies for eye problems may be doing exercises, specifically eye exercises. Despite the lack of scientific support, various exercises are believed to help you feel better and ease the strain on your eyes.

Here are some of the eye exercises you can try:

Focus Change

The goal of this exercise is to challenge your focus. It requires you to be in a seated position, and perform these motions:

  1. Raise a pointer finger several inches from the eye.
  2. Focus on your finger.
  3. Slowly move it away from your face while maintaining your focus.
  4. Look away for a brief moment at a distant object.
  5. Focus on the outstretched pointer finger and slowly return it toward the eye.
  6. Look away again and focus on a distant area.
  7. Do this three times.

Near and Far Focus

Like the previous exercise, you need to be seated to perform the “near and far” drill. This is how it’s done:

  1. Hold a thumb 10 inches or so from your face. Focus on the finger for 15 seconds.
  2. Next, focus on an object that’s between 10 and 20 feet away for another 15 seconds.
  3. Return your focus to your thumb.
  4. Do this five times.

Figure Eight

A seated position is necessary for this exercise, too. Here’s how it works:

  1. Focus on a spot on your floor around 10 feet away from you.
  2. Use your eyes to trace an imagined figure eight pattern.
  3. Switch directions after tracing the figure eight for 30 seconds.

20-20-20 Rule

Eye strain is generally caused by looking at objects (e.g., computer screens) for an extended period. To help reduce it, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Once every 20 minutes, find an item 20 feet away and look at it for 20 seconds.
